Jordan Lewis grew up in Frederick “running the streets of downtown and Hood College with my two younger brothers that I always had to babysit. We were all over the place, in every store possible!”
She readily admits that she picked on them a little bit. “That’s like a rite of passage. I had to babysit them all the time so I’m grateful they’re alive today. They were not easy to babysit! They’re 18 months apart so they’re like a dynamic duo — always getting into trouble. But it was fun!”
“I have a love for what I consider Frederick — ‘downtown’ downtown! It’s just my favorite. And, to have a store downtown is actually pretty cool now that I see other little kids running around on summer break.”
Jordan loves spending time with family and friends, going to the beach and she loves “the way people think and the psychology of all of it — how cool people are and what made them that way.” She shares that most of her time is taken up by ‘people watching.’
What JKW Beauty and the Mobile Glam Squad Can Do For You
* Instill Confidence
“A makeup artist instills confidence by using color, contour and art in a way to apply products or color to one’s face to enhance their features.
“It’s more than just an accessory. It’s something that creates a feeling.”
* Develop An Intimate Connection For Awesome Results
“Being a makeup artist is for someone who is very creative and artistic. They get to work on a different canvas all the time. They get to know people very intimately.
“Being in close proximity to someone’s face, you just open up this relationship with them that they might not have with somebody who is just chit-chatting with them in a coffee shop.”
* Assist In The Style Selection
“It helps you to understand people more by knowing what their tastes are and trying to help them come to the conclusion of what makeup or hairstyle they want.”
* Highlight Your Uniqueness
“It’s like a fashion expression. It’s an expression of who someone is — if they’re very classic, or super modern or a rock star. It’s just another way to showcase your individuality and your personality.”
* Enhance Your Features
“I think a lot of people think a makeup artist is just someone putting on a product or changing someone’s appearance but it’s really about enhancing and showing people what’s already there.”
The Start of Entrepreneurship With JKW Beauty
While she was at Salisbury University, Jordan didn’t know what she wanted to do. Her father suggested that she take a semester off, find something she’d like to do and take a class.
“So, I took a class in makeup artistry. Why? I have no idea. I was never super into the beauty realm.” She just picked it up because it seemed like something creative. “There were no Interior Design classes at that time.”
After attending the class, she started working for Mac cosmetics. “Mac is like the Nike of the cosmetic world! It’s a pretty high-up company.” Although, she confesses that she didn’t know what Mac was at the time that she interviewed for the job.
Three years later, Jordan was in management. She decided “to create something that didn’t exist back then — A Mobile Glam Squad that comes to you for all of your big events.
“We offer hair, makeup and tanning services for special events. We teach people. We provide application services for all of the big days. The biggest percentage of our business is weddings, obviously, because those are super photographed days.”
“Now, In the day and age of social media, everybody is doing photo shoots for everything. Naturally, professional hair and makeup goes with photography. In the magazine world, you wouldn’t step foot on a platform to do a photo shoot without professional hair and makeup.
It isn’t as big of a deal here. They isn’t a lot of editorial and commercial stuff going on, although that’s changing. We’re like the ‘on set’ Glam Squad for the everyday person.”
The Biggest Challenge Of Growing JKW Beauty And The Mobile Glam Squad
“Managing people because there’s no handbook. And people are people. And I am super empathetic to everyone and everything and what they’re doing. It’s much easier when you’re not in touch with your employees every day.
There are eight on the Mobile Glam Squad team. They’re contracted because of seasonality. “In June, we did 40 weddings. In December, we might do 5 or 6.” Although, Jordon notes, “it’s becoming more common to get married all year round and on different days. We actually had a Wednesday wedding this past July.”
She continues, “When you grow to care about them so intimately like I do with my team — because we work together at big events all the time — there’s no handbook on how to deal with all the stressors or how to motivate someone because people are different. Artists in particular are very emotional and very deep and everything affects them differently.
“It’s definitely a challenge and I enjoy a challenge. But sometimes it’s hard. You just don’t know how people tick. I think that’s why I became so in love with the business aspect because I really love psychology and I feel like that is hand-in-hand in this.”
Advice Jordan Would Give Herself If She Could Turn Back The Clock
“Go slow and sit on a decision before you make it. I’m a risk taker. Nothing really scares me when it comes to business or anything at all really. So, I probably only arrived at this place because I’m not afraid to put myself out there, ask for business or create relationships.
“But, I started my business when I was twenty-one. You’re just a natural risk taker. You have a lot less responsibility. I could spend money on things I probably wouldn’t now. I didn’t have huge repercussions or anything.
Jordon adds, “Because I started that so early and it was risk-taking all the time, that’s what gets you the ultimate big payoff.
“And, my family was supportive. They’ve been in the realm of entrepreneurship and cell phone businesses for a long time. They made it seem like it was normal to take the risk.”
As for now, “I probably wouldn’t take the same risk today at all. Not with a husband and a house and two cars. All of that stuff kind of complicates things. I admire everybody who starts a business when they have a family. It’s hard.
“The younger you are, the more you don’t know about life. Therefore, the more you don’t know about the consequences or the repercussions. It’s almost better because you’re going into something blind.”
Friendly Confirmation That She’s Making A Difference
A friend’s grandfather was sitting next to Jordan at a cookout. “He’s probably one of the brightest people I know. He has a Ph.D. in a thousand different things. He went to Duke. He has a huge wonderful family. He’s someone I admire so much.”
He said, “How’s business?” And, Jordon said, “Great as always. I’m blessed to be busy.” He responded “What you’re doing is so amazing. It’s so much more than makeup. You’re making people feel good about themselves. It’s deeper than just a cosmetic application.
He went on, “They’ll always remember you because you’ll always be life-changing for them. It will always be this big moment. This is way bigger than what most people think makeup artists do.”
Jordan thought, “Wow. I’ve arrived if someone can feel that coming from my business.”
The Business Management Platform Known As Booker Is Here To Stay
“Basically, it’s an all-encompassing reports, marketing, social media, scheduling, on-line booking, payment-taking whole shebang! It’s the best thing I’ve ever happened upon!”
“There would be no way I could have grown my business at the percentage I have without that program.”
