Jackie Pickett was born in Bronx, New York and migrated to Middletown at a very young age. Along with her three younger sisters, she continued to spend summers on a lake in upstate New York.
She now lives in Mt. Airy with her husband, their daughter, 20, and their son, 14. Their home is also shared with three dogs and a cat.
In her free time, Jackie loves to write, listen to music, draw — “kind of just a lot of creative things.” It’s that same creative passion that’s put to work to build an online presence for her clients at Abloom Social Media Management.
Growing A Business Or Organization With Social Media
How can this savvy new entrepreneur help grow your business or organization? Here’s just a sampling of what she can do for you:
* Develop an online social media presence.
* Maintain an online social media presence.
* Define your target audience.
* Expand that audience.
* Build meaningful relationships.
* Comment moderation.
* Utilize all existing resources and tools.
* Reputation management.
* Content creation.
Jackie shares a pearl of entrepreneurial wisdom. “Every person that a business owner interacts with online is essentially a past customer, a current customer or a future customer.”
That bit of knowledge makes her believe “in the importance of engaging and interacting with others through social media.. Ultimately, not only is that going to be good for expanding your business and getting your name out there but it’s going to increase your profitability.” Ka-Ching!
Jackie’s Journey From Special Ed To Social Media Management
Jackie worked with Frederick County Public Schools as a Special Ed Assistant. She then worked for a company doing Applied Behavior Analysis Therapy with children with Autism. “That was a little bit more one-on-one. More engaged.”
Stepping into her entrepreneurial shoes was a very gradual process. “Several years ago,” she shares, “just for fun I guess, I started a blog of my own. I started doing a lot of creative writing.
“That kind of gave me the insight into this world that I really didn’t know existed and it gave me the opportunity to connect with others through writing. After that, I started freelancing as an article writer.”
A sudden tragedy within Jackie’s family inspired her to create and build a social presence in honor of a family member. “That’s when I really began to witness the power of social media.”
Recognizing her talents, a good friend nudged her to launch her own business in May of this year. “Since then, I’ve just been managing social media accounts for several businesses. I love this industry and I’m having a blast!”
She continues to offer content creation. “That’s what drew me to this industry. That’s one of my favorite aspects of it.” Jackie will create content one time or on a steady basis. It’s up to the client.
The Biggest Challenge Of Being An Entrepreneur
“I don’t consider myself a salesperson nor do I really want to,” she confides. “So, it’s difficult for me to market myself and try to sell my services.”
Jackie adds, “I would much rather have someone see my work or hear about what I do successfully and reach out to me. I’m striving for balance between the two.”
Advice Jackie Would Give Herself If She Could Turn Back The Clock
“For the longest time, even when I had a career which I loved, I had these interests on the side that I never really thought about using as a career path. It took a good friend to open my eyes to that.”
Now she knows that “you can actually take something that you love and make a career out of it. They say ‘find what you love doing and you’ll never hate a Monday again‘ and it’s true.”
Jackie advises anyone who is not satisfied in a current job to explore the options. “If you have interests that you would like to pursue and maybe make a career out of it, go for it if you can.
“It makes your life much more fulfilling to do something that you love and that you’re passionate about.” She’s proof of this.
Making A Difference Through Social Media
Jackie has ample affirmation that social media plays an important role. All she needs to do is look at the interaction that takes place.
“One of the pages that I manage is centered around a tragedy,” says Jackie. “I had parents write on this page that they wake up in the morning and they appreciate their children more. And, that they no longer worry about the small things.
“I just find that so profound that we can take these images and content and put them together and inspire people in that way. It’s very gratifying when you feel like you just impacted someone’s life — even when it’s a small impact.”
The App That Keeps It All Together
Jackie admits that she’s an avid list maker. “I have to stay organized. My life revolves around all of my lists. It’s such a simple tool but I’m obsessed with my Notes application. I keep everything in there!”
She uses it to “just kind of organize my thoughts for the day, create ‘to do’ lists and store information that I use regularly so I can copy and paste it into other documents.
“I love my lists. They make my life work.”
Jackie Shares An Inspirational Quote
“I never lose. I either win or I learn.” – Nelson Mandela
“I think that’s a really good way to look at things. That life is not really made up of losses — just lessons.”
