Dr. Linda Potts was born in Washington, D.C. but has resided in Maryland most of her life. She recalls moving to Alaska when she was about four years old and spending about a year and a half there before moving back to Maryland.
Then, when she was about eleven, her family moved to Thailand for a few years. She describes that adventure as a “great, great time of my life to be able to be there. I really enjoyed it.”
A few weeks after returning to Maryland, she entered a boarding school in Virginia for her high school years. She then attended college to earn a four-year degree in Nursing and worked as an RN until about the age of forty-two.
“Most of my clinical experience was as an ER Trauma nurse which I absolutely loved. I enjoyed that tremendously.” Dr. Potts then held a variety of management positions.
“I continue to hold my RN license even though I do have my Doctorate in Natural Medicine. I like being able to be involved in both of those worlds.”
She has two children, three step-children and five grandchildren and enjoys outdoor activities — hiking, biking, camping, canoeing, kayaking. As for crafts, she used to be passionate about quilting because “it was a way for my mind to quiet.”

The Start Of Healing Waters Wellness Center
On Super Bowl Sunday, 1998, Dr. Potts collapsed to the floor with severe pain on her right side. It was discovered through abdominal x-rays that she had mysterious inflammation of every organ in her body.
“I was in and out of consciousness for the next three weeks. Over the following months, my health began to slightly improve.” Eventually, she went back to work but had a cot in her office in case she needed to rest.
“I did Quality Improvement, Risk Management and Utilization Review. They didn’t have people that were really knowledgeable in filling in those spots so they really needed me there. They did whatever they could to make sure I could get the work done.”
At the end of four years of tests and visits to medical specialists, she had become totally bedridden and had to quit her job. “I was in so much pain. I wasn’t able to walk myself to the bathroom because my feet hurt so bad with any kind of pressure put on them.
“I wasn’t able to feed myself sometimes. My husband had to feed me because my hands hurt so bad I couldn’t hold a fork. I couldn’t even carry on a conversation with somebody without my husband being there to translate what I was trying to say because I would say something and the words would come out all jumbled. They’d make no sense at all.”
Her eventual final diagnosis was Chronic Fatigue, Fibromyalgia and Lyme Disease. Medicines didn’t help. When her family physician said she might have to be bedridden for the rest of her life, she knew that wasn’t an option.
She decided then to start looking at alternative medicines. “That began a totally different journey.” She tried acupuncture, chiropractic, herbal supplements and many other things. She tried each new potential remedy for six weeks. Nothing worked.
Finally, a friend from church recommended that she go for a special screening. She went and was given a multitude of supplements to take. She knew it was going to be her answer.
The screening showed that she had fluke parasites from the Philippines. She had been there on vacation for a few weeks when living in Thailand. I worked on the parasites and over that six week period of time, I got better.”
A subsequent screening then showed Lyme Disease. “Our bodies will help us identify what needs to be addressed first. Our bodies can tell us so much about what’s going on, what it needs and when it needs it.”
Healing Waters Wellness Center opened its doors in 2004 in a rented space. In 2006, Dr. Potts relocated the practice to her own newly purchased building in Smithsburg. She has now been practicing Natural Medicine for eleven years.
Western medicine still has its place. “We are excellent, excellent people when it comes to emergency situations. We’re the best in the world as far as I’m concerned. But, when it comes to chronic issues, people don’t know what to do with you.”
Biggest Challenge At The Helm Of Healing Waters
“Getting people to understand when you’re using natural medicine for your healing, it’s a process — it’s not an automatic fix.
“In Western medicine, we’ve been so conditioned. You’ve got a headache. Okay, take a pill and twenty minutes later the headache is gone. We want everything instantly.
Advice Dr. Potts Would Give Herself If She Could Turn Back Time
“As a practitioner, I would start learning about Alternative Medicine or Natural Medicine much sooner. There are so many things that can be helpful when working with patients in the ER when you know what you’re looking for. Our bodies give so many clues of what’s going on.
“From a business perspective, I had no clue when I started this that I would be an entrepreneur.” Her husband encouraged her to start her own business but she admits that she lacked confidence. “I’d always been an employee.”
So, the advice would be “Go for it. Dream bigger than you can ever imagine and keep that goal in mind. You can do more than what you really think that you can. And, enjoy it!”
Making A Difference At Healing Waters Wellness Center
A young man came to see Dr. Potts in 2012. He had been diagnosed with Bell’s Palsy. He wasn’t able to close his right eye, the right side of his face drooped and he complained of a metallic taste in his mouth. He also had right ear sensitivity, sinus congestion, acid reflux and night sweats.
He had already had two sessions in one week with an acupuncturist and showed very little improvement. The accupuncturist then asked Dr. Potts to see him.
“Within five days of him following my plan, there was a lot of improvement. Within seven days, there was 90% recovery. To be able to see this physically was really, really cool.” He eventually had a full recovery.
